Sharon teaches Academic Tech Communications at Bethel High, a school of 1875 students in grades 9-12. The use of Career Choices began with a pilot program that was started three years ago. Academic Tech is a Tech Prep program funded partly with Carl Perkins funds. It began as a joint effort of nine school systems on the Virginia Peninsula. Science, Math, and Communications teachers worked together with Vocational teachers to develop a program that would teach the skills needed for the workplace. The Academic Tech students are all proficient in word processing, desktop publishing, and multimedia presentations by the time they leave the 10th grade! The Communications teachers who developed the curriculum (Sharon was one of the original writers) decided to continue using the school system's adopted literature text and to supplement it with additional texts which would add more of a workplace focus. Career Choices was chosen because it incorporates the workplace skills emphasized by business leaders, but also includes literature. Contact Sharon by phone, fax, or e-mail.
