In 2002, Karen Shiner joined Academic Innovations, where she has successfully helped educators develop meaningful dropout prevention programs. Karen is currently working with state and district-level education coordinators throughout the country, helping to provide research and statistics supporting Career Choices as a successful component of their proposed dropout prevention strategies.
Karen's passion to help America’s young adults desire more for their futures began after working for more than 15 years with hundreds of high school dropouts in the hospitality industry. Over time, while working as a manager in such casino hotels as the Golden Nugget, Flamingo Hilton, and Sam’s Town, Karen realized that once young adults quit school to join a casino, they are trapped in that income and industry for the rest of their lives.
Karen received in-depth Hospitality/Vocational Education training with the Golden Nugget Management Training programs and earned several supervisory awards while working for the hotel. Karen ran her own company from 1996 until 2002 where she helped business owners across the state plan and utilize the best products available for their specific companies.
Karen lives in Saint George with her husband, Lloyd, and 12-year old daughter, Amanda. While working, Karen is also very involved in both the education and extracurricular activities of her daughter, who recently received a certificate from the UT Department of Education notifying her that she is among the top 10% of our nation’s students.
