SCANS Skills

The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Labor to determine the skills young people need to succeed in the world of work.

The initial SCANS report, What Work Requires of Schools, outlined the foundation skills (basic skills, thinking skills, and personal qualities) and the workplace competencies the workplace requires of workers.

The Award-Winning Career Choices Series Builds SCANS Skills
Section Section Details
Foundation Skills
  • Basic Skills
  • Thinking Skills
  • Personal Qualities

An effective Career Choices series program supports reading, writing, and computation while promoting goal setting, problem solving, and the creation of a positive vision of the future. Career Choices also helps students develop self-esteem, self-regulation, and a sense of accountability.

Resources

The project-based learning in the Career Choices series offers students opportunities to practice resource management, allowing students to identify, organize, plan, and allocate time, money, human resources, and technology.

Interpersonal Skills

The Career Choices series utilizes cooperative learning techniques, promoting collaboration and encouraging students to practice interpersonal skills by working in teams, leading, negotiating, and teaching others.

Information

As they master a proven planning process, students using the Career Choices series must gather, evaluate, and organize data to produce a product—an online 10-year Plan. This process requires a variety of information management strategies.

Systems

The Career Choices series includes exercises that help students master a systems-oriented planning process—starting with simple tasks and working toward more complex ones—as they create a personalized 10-year Plan.

Technology

The Career Choices series presents a variety of opportunities for students to utilize technology, not the least of which is the development of an online 10-year Plan using My10yearPlan.com®.
